Changing the Soundtrack: Lessons from Jon Acuff That Hit Home

Recently, I had the privilege of hearing Jon Acuff deliver a powerful keynote at our Georgia REALTORS conference , and let me tell you—it was one of those messages that stuck with me long after the conference ended. It resonated so much that I brought the highlights back to my team, and they loved it just as much as I did.

The core of Jon’s message? Your thoughts become your soundtrack.

We all have a soundtrack playing in our minds—a loop of repetitive thoughts that shape our beliefs, decisions, and ultimately, our results. The problem? Many of us are unknowingly stuck on a broken soundtrack—one filled with self-doubt, limiting beliefs, and fear. We subconsciously have been playing these limiting thoughts on repeat to ourselves for years. For example, when I think back to my younger years, I can remember thoughts of ‘I’m too short, or it’s because I’m female, or I’ll never get my pre-baby body back’. And for others, maybe it’s ‘I never went to college, or I didn’t come from a two-parent household.’  Those thoughts can limit what we are truly capable of.

The good news? We can change the track.

The Power of a New Soundtrack

Jon shared a simple but transformative process for rewriting the mental scripts that hold us back:

  1. Retire the Broken Soundtrack
The first step is recognizing the limiting thoughts that play on repeat. Jon gave a great test: Write down one dream and listen to your immediate reaction. Is it filled with self-doubt? Do you hear a voice saying, You can’t do that? That’s a broken soundtrack.
  2. Replace It with a New One
Ask yourself three critical questions about those thoughts:

    • Is it true?
    • Is it helpful?
    • Is it kind?
  3. If the answer is no, it’s time to rewrite that story. Instead of I’ll never be able to afford a home, replace it with I am taking steps to become a homeowner. Instead of I’m not good at leading, replace it with I am learning and growing as a leader every day.
  4. Repeat the New Soundtrack
This is where the real transformation happens. Just like a song stuck in your head, the more you repeat your new soundtrack, the more it becomes your reality. Consistency is key.

One Goal. One Focus. One Step at a Time.

Jon also emphasized the power of focusing on one goal at a time. Instead of overwhelming ourselves with everything we need to do, we should narrow in on just one thing and move toward it intentionally. This struck a chord with me because, as a leader, a real estate developer, and an entrepreneur, I juggle many responsibilities. But real progress comes from clarity and focused action.

I’m not just applying this mindset shift in my own life—I’m bringing it to my team. We’re actively working on changing our soundtracks, defining our “one thing,” and taking steps toward our biggest goals.

Moving Forward

I’m excited to continue implementing this in my life and in my work. Whether it’s helping my team break through mental barriers, guiding renters toward homeownership, or scaling my development projects, it all starts with the soundtrack I choose to play.

So, what’s your soundtrack? And is it time for a new one?
